Last week we had the pleasure of sitting down with Gavin from Turning Tides to explore something simple but powerful: what becomes possible when local organisations choose collaboration over competition.

Across West Sussex, both Turning Tides and Arun Counselling Centre support people navigating incredibly complex circumstances. For many individuals experiencing homelessness, life is not just about finding a roof. It is about rebuilding safety, identity, trust and hope. Housing and mental health are deeply intertwined, and progress in one area often depends on support in the other.

Our conversation focused on three key areas:

Joint funding opportunities
By working together on funding bids, we can demonstrate a more holistic offer. Funders increasingly look for collaborative, community-based solutions. A partnership between housing support and therapeutic support shows impact that extends beyond short-term intervention. It signals long-term change.

Access to CPD for counsellors
We discussed how Turning Tides’ counsellors might access continuing professional development through Arun Counselling Centre. Shared learning strengthens practice across both organisations. It also ensures that practitioners supporting individuals facing homelessness have access to specialist knowledge and reflective space. When professionals feel supported, clients feel the benefit.

A clear referral pathway
Creating a transparent and accessible route for Turning Tides clients to apply for counselling ensures that when someone is ready to engage in therapy, the process is straightforward. Removing practical barriers increases the likelihood that individuals can access support at the right time.
